What is an investment home loan?

An investment home loan is used to fund the purchase of an investment property to be rented out, rather than an owner-occupied loan for a property that is purchased for you to live in.

As the rental market can be uncertain and there are more ongoing maintenance costs involved in an investment property, banks and other lenders view investment home loans as riskier than an owner-occupied loan. This is why the interest rate on an investment loan is higher than an owner-occupied home loan and there are stricter lending conditions.
